Unit N2

Surds

Surds appear frequently in mathematical calculations, especially when trying to solve quadratic equations. Generally we prefer to write rather than the decimal expansion 1.732….. This is because (a) its quicker, (b) the decimal expansion is never fully accurate and (c) the decimal digits don’t follow a simple pattern. For this latter reason we say that surds are irrational numbers.

Unit N2.1: Simplifying Surds
Unit N2.2: Adding and subtracting surds
Unit N2.3: Multiplying out surds
Unit N2.4: Rationalising the denominator
**Unit N2.5: Solving equations with surds.**

Learning Objectives

In this section the student will be able to

  • Write surds in their simplest form.
  • Add, Subtract and Multiply surds.
  • Divide surds using the principle of conjugation.
  • Solve surdal equations.**
