Here we need to substitute one variable from the linear equation into the more complicated equation.

e.g. Solve the simultaneous equations

However, when we substitute either of these forms in equation (2), we want to make the resulting equation easy to manipulate. We can therefore avoid any fractions by making the substitution x = 11 - 2y.
