Percentages are all around us. They are used to measure proportions, to compare changes and to calculate a range of measures in money, such as VAT, Income tax, profit and salary increases. Percentages link well with ratios and fractions as well as with statistical diagrams such as pie charts.

There are 5 main objectives with which GCSE students will need to be familiar.

Unit N1.1: Converting fractions, decimals and Percentages.
Unit N1.2: Finding the percentage of a quantity.
Unit N1.3: Changing an original quantity by a percentage.
Unit N1.4: Calculating the percentage change.
Unit N1.5: Calculating percentage profit or loss.
Unit N1.6: Calculating the original value after a percentage change.
Unit N1.7: Challenging percentage questions.

Learning Objectives

In this unit the student will be able to

  • Convert between fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • Find the percentage of a given quantity.
  • Increase or decrease a quantity by a given percentage.
  • Calculate the percentage change that has been applied.
  • Calculate the value of the original figure after a given percentage change has been applied.
