Algebra Unit 6: Linear Equations

Frequently, when faced with real-life problems to solve we will first need to represent the situation using algebra. The solution to these problems can be found if we are able to unravel the algebra using standard rules. Solving equations are therefore very central to Mathematics and are extremely important in the modern world.

Before proceeding, it is essential to recall the golden rule in keeping equations balanced

Perform the same operation to one side of the equation as you do to the other.

Unit 6.1: Multiplication and Division only.
Unit 6.2: All four arithmetic operations.
Unit 6.3: Equations containing brackets.
Unit 6.4: Equations containing fractions.
Unit 6.5*: Equations containing the unknown on both sides.
Unit 6.6: Modelling using linear equations.

Learning Objectives
In this section the student will be able to

  • Solve linear equations where the variable appears on each side of an equation.
  • Solve linear equations containing brackets or fractions.
  • Recognise how real-life problems can be modelled by linear equations.
