On-line Resources
Welcome to
the maths site.
So, you're thinking
of studying A level Maths.
This site is
designed to encourage you (or maybe put you off), depending how
good you are at maths and how hard you are prepared to work, or
perhaps you just want to brush up on your GCSE skills.
If you want
to do Maths at Oldham Sixth Form College you will need to get at
least a C at higher level or a B at Intermediate. We prefer it if
you get an A or more. In our experience very few students with C
higher or B intermediate succeed at A level.
Even if you
are heading for an A, there may be areas that you are not totally
happy with.
The area many, even able, students have problems with is algebra
and this is the area you must be totally at ease with if you are
to succeed at A level. For this reason a large proportion of this
site is taken up with improving algebra.
We recommend
you work through the units in the order they are numbered, though
the Problems, Puzzle Corner, Applied Maths or the Maths
Miscellaneous
can be dipped into at any time.
Everybody should
try the first few sections of each unit to consolidate basic skills.
Throughout the work there are sections and questions that are starred
(*) which are targeted at people aiming
to get an A or A* in their GCSE and who want to stretch themselves.
If you are a real brain box and find the early ones way too easy,
try the (*) ones straight away.
The first Algebra
unit is Always, Sometimes, Never. These are short
questions designed to make you think carefully and help you to
avoid
mistakes later
on.
Don't rush the
questions. Don't expect to get through it all at once, but don't
give up too easily. If there is anything you still don't understand
after you have tried the exercises go and see your Maths teacher
at school.
Remember: NO
PAIN, NO GAIN.
