Unit 5: Changing The Subject

There
are many scientific and technology disciplines in which it
is extremely important to be able to rearrange equations and
calculate values. For example, let's calculate the acceleration
of a particle given the initial speed u, final speed
v, and time duration t.
In
this case we need to rearrange the equation v = u + a t
into the equation

Objectives
In
this section the student will be able to
- Transpose
the subject of a formula where the subject appears once,
working with the four arithmetical rules of multiplication,
division, addition and subtraction.
- Transpose
the subject of a formula where the subject appears more
than once.
- Transpose
the subject where powers, roots and/or factorisation is
necessary.
- Use
direct substitution from one formula into another, forming
the subject.
