The Economic Impact of Tourism - Activity 1

  Activity 1

  Now that you have a basic understanding of the multiplier effect, read through the  following information and fill in the gaps with the words provided, to help develop  your understanding.

Tourism & National Economies

 Countries may earn money from tourism in a number of ways. These include;

  • SPENDING BY INCOMING TOURISTS
  • TAXATION ON THINGS PEOPLE BUY (VAT, EXCISE DUTY) and on other employees (E.G. INCOME TAX)
  • ADDED FUNDS FROM FOREIGN CURRENT EXCHANGE.

 International tourism is very valuable to all tourism destinations.

    Impacts may also be on the environment. The development or growth of tourism has led to a negative impact on the environment all over the world. There are many concerns these are the main ones :

 • Pollution of the seas because of extra sewage or chemicals and sometimes due    to water sports.

 • Too much of a demand (or need) for light heat and water which will be used by    more tourists by having showers or lighting their apartments at night.

 • Destruction of wildlife habitats for example the building of a new runway at    Manchester airport meant trees and woodland were removed and this destroyed    the wildlife that lived there.

 • Litter on beaches and in the countryside

 • Wasting way (erosion) of footpaths, coastlines and riverbanks as too many    tourists visit a particular area.

 • Traffic congestion and overcrowding can lead to transport noise.
