A speech by Adolf Hitler, 1924

In November 1923, Adolf Hitler was arrested following a failed attempt to seize power by force in Munich (the Munich Putsch). Hitler was charged with treason. Hitler made the speech below at his trial.

Read the document and answer the questions that follow.

"I believe that the hour will come when the masses, who today stand in the street with our swastika banner, will unite with those who fired upon them… When I learned that it was the police who fired, I was happy that it was not the Reichswehr (the army) which had stained its record: the Reichswehr stands as untarnished as before. One day the hour will come when the Reichswehr will stand at our side, officers and men… For it is not you, gentlemen, who pass judgement on us. That judgement is spoken by the eternal court of history… That court will judge us, the Quartermaster-General of the old army (Ludendorff), his officers and soldiers, as Germans who wanted only the good of their own people and Fatherland: who wanted to fight and die."
