Settlement worksheet

Lesson Objective:

1. To understand the function of settlements.
2. To use the Internet to find a map of your local settlement.
3. Understand and recognise changes in a settlement and annotate your map to locate this changes.

Skills you will learn and practice:

1. Searching the Internet and edited text.
2. Annotating the map with arrows using drawing tools in word.

 


Question 1.

Complete the settlement hierarchy.

Question 2.
What services would you expect to find in a town that you would not find in a village – explain your answer fully.

Question 3.
Visit the www.old-maps.co.uk/* - and study an old map of your home village or town. Save the image by adding it to your favourites section in your web browser.

Question 4.
Visit Ordnancesurvey.co.uk* - and find a modern map of your town. Take a good look at the photograph and explain how your village/town has changed, using the map you found as evidence. Use the drawing tools in word to annotate your modern map to show these changes.

Question 5.
How will your town/village change in the next 50 years? What parts will expand and which areas might decline. Explain your answers fully.
