Assignment 1

Science at Work

Task 3 Hazards in the Laboratory

1. Find one example of each of the following hazards in the laboratory or the Technician’s Prep Room and enter the names on Task Sheet 4.

  • a toxic substance a flammable substance a corrosive substance
  • a material that is oxidizing an irritant substance a micro-organism hazard
  • a hazard from a laboratory service (e.g. gas, water, electricity)

2. Identify the warning symbol for each hazard and sketch it on Task Sheet 4.

3. Find out the safety precautions to be taken when working with each of the hazards and note these on Task Sheet 4.

Note that you may have to do some research for this Task, for example you may need to look up the meaning of some of the hazard symbols or ask a technician. If you do this, note your source of information on Task Sheet 4.
