Assignment 1

Science at Work

Task 8 Topic 1 Assignment

You are working as a Science Advisor for Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council and have been asked to produce a small booklet on Health and Safety in Laboratories for use in local Schools and Colleges.

Your guide should be aimed at new students and should contain information on common laboratory hazards and safety procedures. It should be clear and easy to read (remember that diagrams and illustrations are often easier to follow than text), and must contain essential information to help students work safely in laboratories. You should also note that your guide may be used by students younger than yourself.

Your guide might contain:-

  • notes from interviews/questionnaires with people who are involved with Health and Safety
  • examples of warning signs, what they mean and where they can be found
  • examples of safety posters
  • what to do if an accident happens
  • escape route(s) in case of fire or other emergency
  • first aid materials available
  • a list of laboratory rules for safe working

You may use IT to produce your guide if you wish. Remember that Health and Safety is often not considered to be an interesting aspect of science and that the more attractive the presentation of your guide, the more likely it is to be read by your intended audience!
