Word classes
or kinds of words
Three of the
basic word classes which you will need to recognise at A/S Level
are:
- Noun - the
name of a thing or person
- Adjective
- a word which describes
- Verb - a "doing " or "being" word

An adverbial
phrase can be added which tells you how or where the verb
is "done", e.g.

Sentences can
take many forms depending how we want to use them. We can:
- ask questions
called interrogatives "Do you like my hair?"
- make statements
to declare things called declaratives "I want to
go home"
- give orders
or commands called imperatives "Give me that!"
