Writing to Argue

The royal family have been very much in the spotlight since the death of the 101 year old Queen Mother.

Many people have spoken of the importance of the Royal family in this country but it is also clear that they are also regarded as old fashioned and not worth all the respect they receive.

Write a newspaper article for adults where you argue in support of the Royal family OR against it. You do not need to address the idea of abolishing it, just give your views as to their worth.

Plan your answer using the following guide…

You might write about:

FOR

  • The "work" done by members of the family supporting and raising the profile of important charities
  • The way they add to the traditions and cultures of our country
  • The way some of them provide a role model for others to follow
  • The importance they hold in other countries

AGAINST

· The irresponsible behaviour of some of the younger members recently
· The large amounts of money they spend on a high standard of living
· The rather out of date nature of a monarchy in 2002
· The fact that they are often regarded as irrelevant by younger people in this country

Remember to

  • Set out your work correctly for an article with columns and proper headings
  • Plan a clear line of argument with points made clearly and in detail
Address your reader directly using questions and other means
