There is a tradition of using lay people, i.e. people with no legal
qualifications, in the decision making process in our courts
There are two important groups of lay people or citizens who carry
out this role in our legal system
- Magistrates &
- Jurors
- Magistrates sit in
the Magistrates’ Court &
- Jurors carry out their duties in the Crown Court
Both
magistrates and jurors are ordinary citizens or lay citizens,
which means that they have no legal qualifications
