Motivation
MAYO
The
Hawthorne Studies
The
work of Elton Mayo led to the development of the Human Relations
school of motivational thought. His work was based upon experiments
he carried out between 1927 and 1932 at the Hawthorne plant of
the Western Electric Company of Chicago.
In order to determine the motivation of workers he made changes
to their incentive schemes, the number of hours they worked and
to their heating and lighting conditions. He found that whatever
changes were made the result was always the same, output and motivation
rose. From the results, he concluded that workers were motivated
simply by the interest shown in them.
