BIOLOGY EXCELLENCE
ENZYMES
.

Why have I chosen this design to illustrate enzymes?
Well hopefully by the end of the topic you will see why.

Enzyme Illustration Image

FUNCTION
What is the job of enzymes?

They are amazing molecules, that are produced by living cells. Each cell has hundreds of enzymes inside it. The reason why there are so many are because each enzyme only carries out one reaction.

One of the most powerful enzymes is the one in the tail of the firefly. It is called Luciferase and it produces light at the tail of the fly. Flashlight fish have a similar enzyme beneath their eyes. They use this light to hunt for prey in the darkness of the ocean.

DEFINITION
An enzyme is a globular protein that catalyses chemical reactions in living organisms. A catalyst speeds up reactions without being used up it's self.

After that very brief introduction to enzymes, your next task is to go to the following web page to learn about all the different type of enzymes and to try the bite size test. Good luck.

Bite Size - Enzymes - If you've mastered these two pages then try the next they are more interactive and also have a test section at the end for you to master.
Bite size Test -

These pages have given you the knowledge to help you study at A/S level
